Hidden Heat and Hearty Bites at Cookkimao Banthat Thong

Cookkimao on Banthat Thong may look unassuming from the outside — we actually missed the entrance the first time — but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise for a casual dinner stop. Though it’s clearly popular as a drinking spot, we came purely for the food, encouraged by its solid Google ratings. And we weren’t disappointed.

We tried two beef dishes: the stewed beef stir-fried with basil and a spicy beef soup that carried strong tom yum notes. The standout was the stir-fried beef — incredibly fragrant, packing both heat and depth of flavor. The beef had been stewed until meltingly tender, then given a fiery lift from the basil and chilies. The soup, meanwhile, was rich with herbs, lemongrass, and lime, and showcased fresh ingredients in every spoonful.

Do note: the spice levels are legit, and might surprise those not used to Thai heat — especially in the stir-fried beef. But if you enjoy bold, aromatic flavors, you’re in for a treat.

Inside, the restaurant has a lively, social vibe, likely from the drinking crowd, but it still felt welcoming and chill for those just looking for good food. The servers were friendly and happy to assist.

Overall, Cookkimao delivers on flavor, authenticity, and atmosphere. A great place to explore deeper Thai flavors beyond the usual tourist fare — just bring a bit of heat tolerance with you.
