🏘 Wat Nang Nong Worawihan, a third-class royal monastery, is believed to have been built during the Ayutthaya period around 1702–1709 AD. Later, King Rama III ordered its restoration because the Bang Nang Nong area was originally the residence of Somdet Phra Sri Sulalai, the royal mother. Upon completion, it was established as a royal monastery.
Important and interesting features within the temple include:
🏠 The Ubosot (ordination hall), a Thai-Chinese architectural style building, features mural paintings of the Buddha’s life and the Three Kingdoms. The principal Buddha image is Phra Phuttha Maha Chakkraphat, a prototype royal Buddha statue in the Mara Vichai posture, cast in bronze, lacquered, and gilded.
⛺ The Viharns (assembly halls) number two. The northern viharn is the Viharn Luang Pho Phut, housing the principal Buddha image Luang Pho Phad. In front of Luang Pho Phad is Luang Pho Phut, a sandstone Buddha statue in Ayutthaya art style.
🏚 The southern viharn is surrounded by a cloister wall. The gatehouse of the cloister wall is in a Western-style arch, but the door frame is circular in Chinese art style.
🛕 The main chedi (stupa) is in Rattanakosin style. Its construction date is unknown, but it is a style popular in the early Rattanakosin period.
