Wat Nang Nong Worawihan is an ancient temple believed to have been built during the Ayutthaya period when it was the capital. It underwent a major restoration during the reign of King Rama III in 1832, when the old structures were demolished and completely rebuilt.
The new restoration style follows the royal preference of King Rama III’s era, which can be seen in the ubosot (ordination hall), viharn (assembly hall), chedi (stupa), the temple’s front pavilion, and the mural paintings, all featuring a blend of Thai and Chinese art styles.
Ubosot
Built during King Rama III’s reign, the architectural style reflects the royal preference of that period. It is constructed of brick and mortar, with the gable decorated with Chinese glazed tiles. The door arches feature toddy palm flower patterns, and the doors and windows are adorned with stucco reliefs.
Principal Buddha Image in the Ubosot
Created during the restoration in King Rama III’s reign, it is named “Phra Phuttha Maha Chakkraphat.” This Buddha image is in the Mara Vichai posture, cast in bronze and gilded, with a lap width of 2.25 meters. The decorative attire worn over the Buddha can be removed piece by piece.
Mural Paintings
The mural paintings inside the ubosot include:
- The upper section above the window frames depicts the story of Chompoo Bodee Sutra.
- The lower section features Chinese-style paintings called “Lai Kamalao,” illustrating the Three Kingdoms. Between the door panels are important images of Fu, Lu, and Shou.
The Three Kingdoms story is beautifully and intricately painted. The temple grounds are peaceful and serene.
Additionally, there are a viharn, chedi, and prang with stunning artistic features worth admiring.
You should visit this temple to pay respects at least once to experience its unique and harmonious beauty that you won’t find anywhere else.
A little secret: Don’t forget to pay respects to the statue of King Rama III nearby. There is a bell you can ring, and after chanting a mantra, you can take a red lucky bag home for worship. It’s truly amazing!
