Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is located next to the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It is one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Thailand. Originally named Potaram Temple, it was founded by King Rama I in 1656 while the Grand Palace was still under construction. In 1788, it was officially renamed Wat Pho, and the name "Temple of the Reclining Buddha" comes from the giant reclining Buddha statue inside the temple.
Besides being a royal temple, Wat Pho is also the birthplace of traditional Thai medicine and Thai massage, playing an important role in Thai culture and lifestyle. It is a must-visit attraction for tourists.
Highlights of Wat Pho:
The Reclining Buddha statue inside the temple is 46 meters long, 5 meters wide at the feet, and 3 meters high. The distance between its base and headpiece is 15 meters. It is gilded and made of brick and plaster, then painted and gold-leafed. The mother-of-pearl inlay on the soles of the Buddha’s feet features 108 Buddhist symbols, representing the Buddha’s wisdom and perfection.
Wat Pho is not only a religious site but also the birthplace of Thai massage.
