The Temple of Heaven (天坛) is one of Beijing’s most famous landmarks, originally built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty. It was used by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to pray for good harvests and offer sacrifices to heaven. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit attraction in Beijing.
Highlights of the Temple of Heaven
- Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿): The most iconic structure, a grand circular hall where emperors prayed for good harvests.
- Echo Wall & Circular Mound Altar (回音壁 & 圜丘坛): An architectural marvel where whispers can travel along the curved walls.
- Imperial Vault of Heaven (皇穹宇): A beautifully designed building used for storing sacred tablets.
