If you’re planning a full day in Beijing and want to soak in some serious imperial vibes, a visit to the Forbidden City is an absolute must. Here’s a practical and chill one-day itinerary with tips on getting there, what to see, where to stay, and—of course—what to eat!
⸻
Getting There 🚗➡️🏯
Start your day early and book a Didi to Donghuamen (东华门). From there, enjoy a 1km walk (about 18 mins) along the iconic red palace walls to reach Wu Men (午门), the main entrance. It’s a nice, quiet stroll in the morning—perfect for photos and people-watching.
Heads up: you’ll need your passport or ID for the security check and ticket scan, so keep it handy!
⸻
What to See 🔍✨
The Forbidden City is massive, so stick to the essentials for a smooth 3–4 hour visit:
• 午门 (Meridian Gate): The grand southern entrance.
• 太和殿 (Hall of Supreme Harmony): Huge and stunning—this is where emperors held major ceremonies.
• 中和殿 & 保和殿: Rehearsal halls and banquet spots.
• 乾清宫 (Palace of Heavenly Purity): Emperor’s living quarters.
• 坤宁宫 (Palace of Earthly Tranquility): Empress’s residence.
• 御花园 (Imperial Garden): Tranquil, with pavilions and ancient trees.
• Exit at 神武门 (Gate of Divine Prowess): If you’ve still got energy, climb Jingshan Park for a killer view of the palace rooftops. Totally worth it! ⛰️
⸻
Where to Stay 🛏️
Book a room at 汉庭酒店(北京前门天坛西门店) (Hanting Hotel, Qianmen Tiantan West Gate). It’s clean, budget-friendly, and only 15 minutes’ drive from the Forbidden City. You’re also close to cool spots like Temple of Heaven and Qianmen Street.
⸻
Where to Eat 🍜🦆
You’ll be starving after all that walking, so here are some solid food options nearby:
• 便宜坊 (Bianyifang Roast Duck): Famous for their crispy Peking Duck. Wrap it in pancakes, add sauce—chef’s kiss!
• Noodle Loft (面爱面): Hand-pulled noodles, lamb skewers, and zhajiangmian (炸酱面)—local comfort food.
• TRB Hutong: For a bougie break, this fine-dining gem in a restored Qing courtyard serves amazing European dishes.
• Street snacks: Keep an eye out for jianbing (煎饼) and tanghulu (糖葫芦) near Donghuamen in the evening. Cheap and tasty!
⸻
Quick Tips 📝
• Book tickets online in advance—passport/ID needed.
• Wear comfy shoes—lots of walking!
• Arrive early to beat the crowds (especially weekends).
• The palace doesn’t have much food inside, so eat breakfast before heading in.
⸻
Whether you’re into history, photography, or just want to see where emperors ruled for centuries, the Forbidden City is a total Beijing bucket list item. Don’t miss it!
