Ready for a fresh take on the capital’s icons? Go beyond the mainstream and soak in Beijing's underrated magic, from futuristic reflections at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) to the haunting ruins of Yuanmingyuan Park.

Kick off at the NCPA (No. 2 West Chang'an St.), an architectural marvel that looks almost alien in the morning light. The dome shimmers perfectly against its mirror-like pool, so snap your insta-worthy shot from outside early before crowds hit (Tuesday–Sunday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, closed Mondays; admission ¥30). Tip: The south side gives you that dramatic “floating spaceship” angle.

Next, head to Yuanmingyuan Park (No. 28, Qinghua West Rd.), a sprawling historic ruin where nature and history blend.
