To catch the autumn foliage, you absolutely must set off early! We left for Mutianyu at 10 AM but got stuck in traffic and didn't arrive until 12:30 PM. There are many fast food restaurants or casual eateries nearby, so we ate quickly and then took the cable car up the mountain. We left at 4 PM and spent even more time on the road, finally getting back to the city at 6:30 PM. To avoid crowds and traffic jams, it's recommended to leave before 8 AM on weekends. Also, during peak foliage season, it's advisable to book tickets online in advance to avoid the hassle of queuing on-site.
