There are gardens, and then there’s Butchart Gardens—a place that feels like it was dreamed into existence. Located just outside Victoria, British Columbia, this 55-acre masterpiece is more than just a tourist stop—it's a living canvas that changes with the seasons, and my visit there left me completely enchanted.
I visited in late spring, when the gardens were bursting with life. What struck me most wasn’t just the color or scale, but the story behind the place—a former limestone quarry transformed by Jennie Butchart into one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. That spirit of transformation and care is still palpable in every path, bloom, and pond.
The Sunken Garden was the showstopper for me. Descending the stone steps into a lush, hidden world of flowering trees, fountains, and perfectly sculpted beds felt like entering a fairytale. Every turn revealed a new burst of color—tulips, peonies, and pansies dancing in the breeze.
I spent hours just wandering. The Rose Garden, with its antique-style archways and fragrant paths, was a sensory delight. The Japanese Garden brought peace and mindfulness with its trickling streams and maple-lined paths. And at sunset, I found a quiet bench in the Italian Garden, sipping coffee and watching the light soften over the blooms. It’s rare to feel both inspired and grounded in the same place, but Butchart manages that beautifully.
Best time to visit? April through September is ideal. Spring and summer showcase peak bloom and evening entertainment, but autumn offers stunning foliage, and winter brings festive light displays and a magical charm of its own.
Helpful tips: Butchart Gardens is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Victoria. Buy tickets online to skip the lines, and if you can, stay for the nighttime illuminations in summer—absolutely magical!
Location: Butchart Gardens, Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada
