This fine column is a monument to the Belgian constitution. The column is topped with a statue of Leopold I, the first king of the modern state of Belgium. The column also acts as a monument to the unknown soldier making it doubly special.
There are four allegorical female figures representing the constitution, freedom of worship, freedom of pressed, freedom of association and freedom of education.
The tomb of the unknown soldier is at the base of the column, with two plaques as memorials for Brian's soldiers off the two worlds wars and an eternal flame.
The column commemorates the Belgian Constitution by the National Congress. On the top of the column is a statue of King Leopold I, Belgium’s first monarch. It sits on large plaza with views over the town
Worth the effort to see.
