A symbol of motherhood and power #OlympiaFountainoftheMothersofMacedonia - Skopje North Macedonia

#September2025
Echoing the magnificent statue of Alexander the Great near Alexander the Great Square in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, stands another equally striking monument: the Olympia Fountain. Dedicated to Alexander the Great's mother, Olympias, the fountain embodies the power of motherhood and its profound influence on history. Located directly in front of the stone bridge on the northeast side of Rebellion Square, the Olympia Fountain features a group of sculptures representing Macedonian mothers, including Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, and Philip II's wife. Olympias, wife of Philip II of Macedonia and mother of Alexander the Great, was a woman of strong will and political savvy. Legend has it that she was a serpent worshipper and firmly believed that her son, Alexander, was of divine descent. Her ambition and influence on her son played a crucial role in Alexander the Great's conquests. This fountain is a key component of the "Skopje 2014" project. Its design cleverly combines the image of Olympias with the element of water, creating a sense of flow and vitality. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing dip during the hot summer months while appreciating the sculpture's artistic details. In Skopje, an urban space dominated by male heroic statues, the Olympia Fountain stands out as a subtle yet powerful presence, representing not only a chapter in Alexander's story but also a symbol of the influence of women in the ancient world.
