Chaozhou West Lake Travel Guide

1. Core Overview
Chaozhou West Lake Park is one of the three famous West Lakes in Guangdong Province (the other two are Huizhou West Lake and Zhaoqing Xing Lake). It has a long history and has been a popular tourist destination since the Tang Dynasty. Here, mountains and waters complement each other, and there are many historical sites, but its biggest feature is the strong local life atmosphere. It is a place for residents to relax, exercise, and entertain, where visitors can experience the most authentic slow life of Chaozhou.

Core Highlights:

Urban Landscape Garden: Small and exquisite, with pavilions, towers, and winding paths, typical Lingnan style.

Local Life Snapshot: Watching locals drink tea, play chess, sing opera, and walk with children is an excellent window to experience the vibrant life of Chaozhou.

Excellent Viewing Spots: The "Rainbow Bridge" and "Lakeside Pavilion" in the park are the best spots to photograph the beautiful West Lake scenery and the distant Hulu Mountain.

4. Main Attractions and Activities
Lakeside Pavilion and Rainbow Bridge:

These are iconic views of West Lake. Walk on the Rainbow Bridge, sit briefly at the Lakeside Pavilion, and overlook the boats on the lake and surrounding greenery—very pleasant.

Shou'an Rock (Cliff Inscriptions):

Located on Hulu Mountain, it is a large group of cliff inscriptions, gathering various carvings from the Tang and Song Dynasties to modern times. It is a must-visit for calligraphy and history enthusiasts.

Virgin Spring:

A spring full of legendary stories with clear and pure water. There is an introduction nearby about its legend, worth checking out.

Hanbi Building (Revolutionary Memorial Hall):

Located inside West Lake Park, it is a small Western-style building blending Chinese and Western architecture. It was once the command post of He Long’s troops after the August 1 Nanchang Uprising and is now a revolutionary history museum open for free visits.

Enjoying Local Life (Hidden Experience):

Have a cup of kung fu tea at the park’s tea house, watch Chaozhou elders play chess, sing opera, and chat—this is the right way to open up the charm of Chaozhou West Lake.

5. Suggested Tour Route
Chaozhou West Lake Park is small and does not require a fixed route; you can stroll freely. But you can follow this idea:
Enter through the main gate → walk along the lakeside, cross Rainbow Bridge to Lakeside Pavilion → after coming ashore, turn left (north) to visit Hanbi Building → if interested, take the path up Hulu Mountain to see the cliff inscriptions → exit from another gate and head to the next attraction.

6. Food Recommendations (Right at the Entrance!)
When visiting West Lake Park, there is one food experience you absolutely cannot miss!

Zhenji Beef Offal Rice Noodles:

Location: Right at the main entrance of West Lake Park (opposite Huan Cheng West Road).

Status: One of the most famous beef offal rice noodle shops in Chaozhou, beloved by countless tourists and locals.

What to Eat: Order a steaming bowl of beef offal rice noodles, with fresh beef offal, rich broth, topped with minced southern ginger and special chili sauce—an exceptional taste.

Tip: There is always a long queue during meal times, be prepared. There are several similarly named shops nearby; usually, the most popular one, "Zhenji Old Tail Beef Offal," is the right choice.

Mosquito Protection: There are many mosquitoes near the water and woods, especially in the evening, so be sure to prepare mosquito repellent.

Pair with Food: One of the biggest motivations to visit West Lake Park is the bowl of rice noodles at the entrance—don’t miss it.

No Need for a Special Trip: It’s not suitable for a dedicated visit but is definitely a perfect break when touring the ancient city.

Wishing you a leisurely and slow time at Chaozhou West Lake!
