This temple uniquely blends traditional Han Buddhist architecture with esoteric Tibetan characteristics. Despite multiple reconstructions, its main structures retain the solemn elegance of Qing Dynasty design. Enclosed by vermilion walls across its 20-acre grounds, Jinci Temple showcases distinctive Tibetan elements through its upturned eaves and bracket sets.
Along the central axis stand the Bell & Drum Towers, Guanyin Hall, and Mahavira Hall, where curved roof corners exude ancient Zen charm. At the rear, the Five Dhyani Buddhas Hall and Weituo Guardian Statue create an atmosphere of sacred solemnity. In the Scripture Depository, sunlight filters through prayer wheels onto golden statues amid chanting, evoking the spiritual ambiance of the Tibetan plateau.
Outside, the temple's lush ancient trees and vibrant flowers contrast sharply with the surrounding Youth Palace and residential areas, embodying the poetic ideal of "building a hut in human realms, yet free from worldly noise." Though no longer at its historical peak, Jinci Temple maintains its essence as a meditation sanctuary where visitors can worship and contemplate within its unique esoteric Buddhist environment.
The compact yet dignified layout features halls like the Guanyin Hall and Mahavira Hall that emphasize simplicity over ornamentation. This spiritual oasis exists in striking harmony with neighboring skyscrapers—mirroring Chengdu's character as a city that embraces modernity while preserving tradition.
Master Nenghai's monastic principles continue to guide the temple, enforcing strict disciplines like afternoon fasting and predawn scripture recitations—a rigorous practice known as "Jinci's House Rules." When Tibetan lama Sherap Gyatso visited, he marveled, "I feel as if standing in a Tibetan monastery"—the highest praise for Master Nenghai's missionary work.
Here, ancient cypresses mute urban clamor; time seems to slow as every brick and tile whispers centuries of stories. From its Ming Dynasty founding through Qing reconstructions to modern adaptation, Jinci Temple has steadfastly upheld its compassionate mission.
