Wat Umong (Suan Phuttharam) is one of Chiang Mai's oldest temples, with a history of over 700 years.
There is clear evidence that it was built by Phaya Mangrai, the great king of the Lanna Kingdom, to serve as a residence for monks invited from Sri Lanka. It was named Wat Welukattharam, or Wat Phai Sip Et Kor, because the temple was situated amidst a lush bamboo forest.
Later, during the reign of Phaya Kuena, he undertook a major renovation of the temple,
renovating the chedi and constructing tunnels in all four directions,
in the current form. He also bestowed the new name,
Wat Umong Thera Chan, after the resident monk.
When Chiang Mai fell under Burmese rule, Wat Umong became deserted until 1949, when
Chao Chuen Siroros revitalized the site.
Inspired by "Buddhadasa Bhikkhu's Suan Mokkhaphalaram" and renamed Wat Umong (Suan Phuttha Dharma), which remains in use today.
