Wat Phan Tao or Wat Pan Tao was built in 1934 and is a contemporary temple of Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan. This is because it used to be the sanctuary of Wat Chotikaram (Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan). There is a legend about the origin of Chiang Mai during the Lua period that says "A wealthy man lived in the middle of the city. These five people were named Millionaire Pan Tao. They established a compound according to the words of Chao Rasi." Therefore, it is assumed that Wat Phan Tao was the home of the wealthy man in the past. Later, Wat Phan Tao was established during the reign of King Saen Mueang. Another legend says that it was originally the site of a thousand kilns for smelting gold to cast the Attharot Buddha image, which was enshrined in the chapel of Wat Chedi Luang. When the casting of the Buddha image was complete, the townspeople built a temple in that area called Wat Phan Tao.
