Wat Phan Tao, an ancient temple in the heart of Chiang Mai

Located on Phra Pok Klao Road, Phra Singh Subdistrict, Mueang District, it was originally the sanctuary and site for the casting of the Attharot Buddha image at Wat Chedi Luang. It was later rebuilt as Wat Phan Tao.

The people of Chiang Mai originally called it "Wat Phan Tao" (a thousand times), meaning that making merit alone would bring a thousand-fold merit. This was later corrupted to "Phan Tao." Another possible origin is the temple's use as a location for the construction of hundreds of kilns for casting Buddha images, hence the name "Wat Phan Tao."

The temple boasts the most beautiful and complete viharn in Chiang Mai. The building is entirely made of teakwood, in the Chiang Saen style. Originally, it was the Ho Kham (Grand Hall) or Khum Luang (Royal Residence) of King Mahotaraprades, the fifth ruler of Chiang Mai. During the reign of King Inthawichanon (the seventh ruler), the viharn was demolished and dedicated to Wat Phan Tao.

There is also a century-old ancient raised pulpit on display. Behind the Viharn Ho Kham Luang is the temple's principal chedi. The bell-shaped structure on an octagonal base is surrounded by beautiful pagodas.
