Wat Phra That Doi Khao Kwai Kaew

Wat Phra That Doi Khao Kwai, Chiang Rai Province
🙏 It is an ancient temple of Chiang Rai Province. It is located on the top of the mountain. It is a viewpoint for the scenery around the city of the province. There is a beautiful ordination hall, a chedi containing the relics of the Buddha's left pinky finger, and the famous four-eared, five-eyed insect.

🧝 According to legend, about 1,000 years ago, Phraya Thammikarat, the ruler of Chiang Rai, built this temple by bringing the relics of the Buddha's left pinky finger, which the monks who came to spread Buddhism in the Lanna region brought to Phraya Thammikarat to enshrine in the chedi.

🪲 The story of the four-eared, five-eyed insect is that Ai Thukkhata, a beggar who raised cows and buffaloes belonging to the village headman, found a four-eared, five-eyed insect caught in a snare on this mountain. So he brought it to raise. It turned out that the four-eared, five-eyed insect liked to eat red coals and excrete gold.

🐃 Doi Khao Kwai Kaew has a story that In the past, there were two mother and child buffaloes who lived and ate on this mountain with a herd of buffaloes. The young buffalo was a Bodhisattva buffalo with glass horns. It lived and ate in the forests and swamps near that mountain. When this white buffalo with glass horns grew up, it became the leader of the herd because it had more strength and intelligence than other buffaloes in the herd. After a long time, the old couple went to farm and grow sesame seeds on that mountain and found the glass buffalo horns. That mountain has been called Doi Khao Kwai Kaew ever since.
