Wat Rong Khun: A White Paradise of Art and Faith in Chiang Rai 🤍
Wat Rong Khun, also known as the "White Temple," is one of Chiang Rai's most iconic and well-known attractions. It's not an ancient temple, but a masterpiece of art created through the faith and brilliant thought of National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.
🎨 Architecture of Purity and Wisdom
Wat Rong Khun is constructed in pristine white, contrasted by tiny mirrors adorning the entire building, making the temple sparkle in the sunlight. This white color symbolizes the Buddha's purity, while the mirrors reflect his wisdom, which illuminates the world.
🌉 Journey to Buddhahood
Entering the temple's main chapel is a symbolic journey:
Hands Reaching Up from Hell (Samsara): Before crossing the bridge, you'll see numerous hands, sculpted as if reaching for help from beneath the ground, representing the lust, craving, and suffering of samsara.
Bridge of Crossing: A bridge leading to the chapel. It symbolizes the transcendence of suffering (the cycle of rebirth) to Buddhahood, the land of Nirvana, true happiness.
Heaven's Gate: Upon crossing the bridge, you'll encounter an archway representing liberation from desire. It features statues of the God of Death and Rahu, who decide one's fate.
🖼️ Stunning Murals
Inside the beautiful chapel, you'll find murals that unexpectedly blend traditional Buddhist concepts with modern symbolism. These paintings serve as a reminder to people to turn away from evil and worldly obsession, and turn to the discovery of the path to liberation and wisdom.
💫 Golden Building: A Worldly Reflection
Although the chapel is pristine white, one building stands out with its golden hue: the restroom. This golden building represents the body and worldly interests, such as money and materialistic obsessions. This contrasts with the white chapel, which represents the mind and the path to liberation. #VisitChiangRai #VisitSecondaryCities
