🏯 History & Significance

Phra That Pha Ngao is believed to have flourished during the 5th–6th Buddhist century, under the rule of Khun Pha Phing, the 23rd monarch of the Yonok Kingdom. The temple was later abandoned and rediscovered in 1976 when locals unearthed the ancient Luang Pho Pha Ngao Buddha image, estimated to be 700–1,300 years old. The temple’s name comes from the large cliff-like rock that provides shade—hence “Pha Ngao,” meaning “shaded cliff.”
