The Lagazuoi Tunnels are a network of World War I-era passages in the Piccolo Lagazuoi mountain in the Italian Dolomites. Originally carved by Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers for shelter, strategy, and mine warfare, they now serve as an open-air museum and a unique hiking trail.
Wartime purpose: From 1915 to 1917, during fierce mine warfare in the Dolomites, both Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops dug tunnels and fortifications into Mount Lagazuoi.
Strategic importance: The mountain was crucial for controlling the Falzarego Pass, a key supply route. To dislodge the enemy on the summit, Italian soldiers carved tunnels to place massive mines beneath the Austro-Hungarian positions.
