Singing Sand Mountain & Crescent Moon Lake ~ Crescent Moon Lake, formerly known as Wuwa Pond, Shajing, and Yaoquan, has been one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Dunhuang since the Han Dynasty and became known as Crescent Moon Lake after the Qing Dynasty. The lake's waters have never dried up for a thousand years. A popular story tells of the Moon Fairy and the Divine Sand Fairy. The fairy left the moon by the spring, and the Fairy repeatedly tried to fill it with sand, but the Fairy used her magic to blow the sand away, thus allowing Crescent Moon Lake to remain dry for a thousand years!
To see Crescent Moon Lake, you have to hike up the sand dunes. The journey is difficult because the sand is so, so, so fine. Fortunately, there are wooden walkways. This time, we rode camels across the dunes, from Singing Sand Mountain all the way to Crescent Moon Lake. Thousands of camels snaked up the mountain, reminiscent of an ancient caravan through the desert. At dusk, you can experience a Silk Road journey!
