Leaving behind the lingering charm of Rome, I took a morning train to Florence. Upon arrival, the atmosphere felt distinctly different. The tranquil and historic streets, along with the iconic red dome of the Duomo visible from almost everywhere, left a lasting impression.
The first stop was the Basilica of San Lorenzo. The interior, tied to the legacy of the Medici family, was simple yet majestic, and the space housing the relics of Saint Lorenzo carried a subtle resonance. Right next door, the Medici Chapels showcased the pinnacle of decorative art. The funerary chapel designed by Michelangelo was particularly captivating.
Next, I headed to the Florence Cathedral (Duomo). Climbing the stairs up Giotto's Bell Tower was exhausting, but the view of Florence from the top made every step worthwhile. The endless expanse of terracotta rooftops was truly picturesque.
Finally, I visited Piazzale Michelangelo, where I ended the day with a view of the Duomo bathed in the hues of the sunset. During the day, Florence had been grand and vibrant, but by evening, it transformed into a warm and romantic city. Florence, the city of the Renaissance, exceeded expectations right from the start.
