The bell tower of the old parish church of Graun is a 14th-century steeple that rises mysteriously from the center of Lake Reschen (Reschensee) in South Tyrol, Italy. The tower is the sole visible remnant of the village of Altgraun (Old Graun) and the former parish church of St. Catherine, which were intentionally flooded in 1950 to create a hydroelectric reservoir.
History
A valley is submerged: In 1939, the Montecatini power company proposed creating a large artificial lake for hydroelectric power by merging three natural lakes. Despite strong opposition from local residents, the project was completed in 1950 after delays from World War II.
