Along with the spring Hakata Dontaku and summer Hakata Gion Yamakasa, the Hakozaki Shrine Hojoya is one of the three major festivals in Hakata.
It is a festival to "cherish the life of all living things, warn against killing, and give thanks for the autumn harvest."
Its origins date back to a divine oracle that said, "Many living things are killed during the battle, so Hojoya should be held accordingly," and it is the most important Shinto ritual that has been going on for over a thousand years.
During the seven-day period, hundreds of stalls line the approach to the shrine. The highlight of the festival is seeing fresh ginger for sale, whole leaves.
It is the best autumn festival in Kyushu.
