Fukuoka's Backyard

If you visit Fukuoka City in the summer, you must not miss the 'Hakata Gion Yamakasa'; if the timing is not right, you should still visit and pay respects to the guardian deity of Hakata streets, 'Kushida Shrine,' and drink three sips of the legendary Reizuru water, which is said to bring health and longevity: one sip for yourself, two sips for your family, and three sips to bless everyone around you.
Another major attraction of Kushida Shrine is the huge and magnificent 'Yamakasa.' This giant and ornate portable shrine is left in the shrine for viewing after the Gion Festival. The decorations on the portable shrine feature samurai related to the Hakata area or characters from ancient Japanese legends and anime, making it quite spectacular.
The shrine is conveniently located, just take the subway to the front of Kushida Shrine. You can also visit the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, or take a stroll in Reisen Park. It's both convenient and pleasant.
