Kushida Shrine-mae Station, located on the Fukuoka City Subway Nanakuma Line, is one of the most culturally rich stations along the route. Opened in 2023, it serves not only as a gateway to Hakata Old Town and Kushida Shrine but also as a "cultural gallery station" that captivates travelers with its design blending local craftsmanship and historical elements.
The station features various displays of Fukuoka's traditional crafts and Hakata Old Town's unique characteristics, including:
• Hakata Ningyo: Unglazed painted dolls with over 400 years of history, recognized as traditional Japanese crafts. Their intricate facial expressions and depictions of everyday scenes are truly remarkable.
• Hakata Okiage: Fabric-layered relief dolls showcasing Hakata women and festive scenes.
• Hakata Mizuhiki: Artistic designs inspired by the sacred knots used in shrine festivals, symbolizing energy and blessings.
• Hakata Gion Yamakasa-related works: Miniature versions of Yamakasa floats and sculptures of running, shouting festival participants vividly bring the spirit of Hakata's festivals to life.
The wall designs are equally impressive, featuring three-dimensional backgrounds made of traditional Hakata tiles and stone, complemented by illustrations themed around Kushida Shrine. This combination creates a space that is both visually appealing and culturally distinctive.
Whether you're taking the subway, visiting the shrine, or simply passing by, this station invites you to pause and immerse yourself in the essence of Hakata's culture.
