Fusang's First Zen Cave: Shofukuji Temple's Gate and the Origins of Japanese Tea

Shofukuji Temple, located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, is Japan's oldest Zen temple. It was founded in 1195 by Zen Master Eisai and belongs to the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect. This temple is not only the starting point of Zen Buddhism in Japan but also deeply connected to the history of tea and Hakata. Upon entering the temple, visitors are greeted by the main gate and the mountain gate. Above the mountain gate hangs a plaque inscribed with "Fusang's First Zen Cave," said to be written by Emperor Go-Toba himself, symbolizing this site as the origin of Zen practice in Japan.

Passing through the mountain gate, one encounters the "Kozan Gokoku Monument," erected in 1895 by late Edo period patriot Kotaro Hiraoka to commemorate the Zen philosophy of protecting the nation. The monument, carved from granite, is simple yet solemn, embodying the fusion of religious and historical spirit. The inscription "Kozan Gokoku" reflects the historical significance of Zen Buddhism and its prayers for national peace.

Shofukuji Temple also has a profound connection to Japanese tea. When Eisai returned to Japan after studying in China, he not only brought back Zen Buddhism but also introduced tea cultivation and drinking culture. Within the temple grounds stands a tree known as the "Tea Tree," accompanied by an explanatory plaque that highlights Shofukuji's role as a key site for the dissemination of tea in Japan. Although the first tea trees were not planted here, Shofukuji became a center for tea propagation and cultural promotion, marking a significant milestone in the history of Japanese tea.

Walking through Shofukuji Temple, one can feel the deep historical and cultural atmosphere. Whether studying Zen Buddhism, exploring the tea ceremony, or admiring the architectural beauty, this is a must-visit landmark in Hakata.
