Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Sri Mahamariamman Temple
This is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang, located in Little India. It was built in 1883. Inside the temple is the statue of Subramaniam, which is decorated with precious gems such as diamonds and emeralds. It is very beautiful. The area above the entrance arch is decorated with intricate sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. It is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, the goddess of rain who warded off smallpox. She is a local deity that South Indian Tamils believe to be a form of the goddess Uma Devi.
