Dazzling Nanyang Architectural Roofs
The various intricate and exquisite roof decorations shown in the note illustration are located at the Longshan Tang Qiu Clan Association in Penang, Malaysia 🇲🇾.
The term "clan association" here differs from the commonly understood "limited company"; it refers to a kinship organization based on local surnames or geographic ties (specifically in the form of ancestral halls or guild halls).
The Longshan Tang Qiu Clan Association was established in the mid-19th century in Penang by the Qiu clan from Fujian, China, who migrated to Nanyang. It is not only an ancestral worship hall but also plays roles in mediating internal disputes, assisting new immigrants to settle, and promoting education.
Returning to the title, the roof structure and decorations of Longshan Tang continue the decorative features of the Minnan and Chaoshan regions, extensively using wood carving, inlaid porcelain, and colorful painting techniques. The flying eaves, upturned corners, beams, columns, and walls are all filled with various exquisitely crafted and auspicious figures, flowers, and mythical beasts, creating a dazzling and mesmerizing spectacle.
