Hoh Xil

Preparation

- Documents: Bring your ID card. If you plan to visit border areas, apply for a border pass in advance at your place of residence.
- Clothing: Prepare warm down jackets, outdoor jackets, fleece jackets, hats, gloves, etc. The temperature difference between day and night is large.
- Shoes: Comfortable sneakers or outdoor shoes.
- Medicine: Anti-altitude sickness medicine, cold medicine, stomach medicine, painkillers, etc.
- Food: High-calorie foods such as chocolate and beef jerky, and plenty of drinking water.

Transportation

- Self-driving: Depart from Xining or Golmud and drive along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109 National Highway). Choose a high-performance off-road vehicle and check the vehicle condition in advance.
- Public transportation: Take a plane or train to Xining or Golmud, and then rent a car or charter a car to get there.

Best Travel Season

The climate is relatively stable and cool from June to August, making it suitable for summer vacation. You may see Tibetan antelope migration in early June.

Accommodation

- Golmud City: Good accommodation conditions, convenient transportation, and dining.
- Tuotuohe Town: There are a small number of guesthouses and tent camps.
- Camping: Camping in the scenic area allows you to experience the starry sky on the plateau, but you need to prepare tents, sleeping bags, and other equipment.

Travel Routes

- One-day tour: Golmud - Kunlun Pass - Budong Spring - Sonam Dargye Protection Station.
- Multi-day tour: Adapt to the environment in Golmud City on the first day and visit the city attractions; go to Kunlun Pass on the second day; arrive at Sonam Dargye Protection Station on the third day; go to Hoh Xil Lake on the fourth day; arrive at Sun Lake on the fifth day; return to Golmud City on the sixth day.

Recommended Attractions

- Kunlun Pass: The gateway to Hoh Xil, where you can see snow-capped mountains and grasslands from a distance.
- Sonam Dargye Protection Station: Learn about ecological protection work and watch wild animals such as Tibetan antelopes.
- Zhuonai Lake: One of the birthing grounds of Tibetan antelopes.
- Hoh Xil Lake: The largest lake in the reserve and a habitat for wild animals.

Reminders

- The altitude in some areas exceeds 4,600 meters. Prevent altitude sickness in advance and avoid strenuous exercise.
- The climate is cold and changeable. Bring enough warm clothes and keep warm.
- Consciously maintain environmental hygiene, do not litter, and do not damage vegetation.
- It is strictly forbidden to take photos or fly drones in special areas.
