Gongyi Grottoes Temple (Gongxian Grottoes) is located at the foot of Dali Mountain in Heluo Town, 5 kilometers north of Gongyi City, Henan Province. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit and a 3A scenic spot.
It is reported that the Gongyi Grottoes Temple was founded during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. It was the place where the emperor and empress of the Northern Wei Dynasty held Buddhist worship activities, and it was also a large-scale grotto excavated by the royal family of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Characteristics of stone carvings: They have strong artistic characteristics of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and also contain the embryonic form of sculpture art from the Northern Qi and Sui Dynasties. They are an artistic style that transitioned from the Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Main points:
1. Picture of the Emperor and Empress worshiping Buddha. It is the only intact one left in the country and can be called a national treasure. Since the painting of emperor and empress worshiping Buddha from Longmen Grottoes was stolen abroad, this one is particularly precious.
2. The most beautiful flying fairy. Their robes are fluttering and they look like immortals. They are mainly distributed around the niches and cave ceilings.
3. Thousand Buddha Shrines. Carved in the Tang Dynasty, the niche is 1.5 meters high and about 3 meters wide. There are 999 small Buddha statues in total, plus the large Buddha statue in the middle, making a total of 1,000.
