Goreme Open-Air Museum

Goreme, historically known as Macan, is one of the oldest sites in the Cappadocia region. It was established after the 9th century AD when Christians sought refuge here to escape persecution by Muslims. Driven by their faith, they carved numerous churches into the unique rock formations.
The Goreme Open-Air Museum is located within the Goreme Valley and features over 30 rock-cut cave churches adorned with exquisite frescoes. During this visit, only the Apple Church and Snake Church were explored. Photography is prohibited inside the caves, and many frescoes have been damaged. Numerous icons have had their eyes gouged out, and there are even graffiti-like carvings left by visitors.
