A Walk Through Time: Chuseok at Gyeongju Daereungwon

Visiting Gyeongju Daereungwon during Chuseok was an exceptionally tranquil experience. A gentle breeze flowed between the high ridges, softly swaying the silver grass, creating a truly peaceful atmosphere. Just walking in the warm early autumn air, bathed in sunlight, brought a sense of calm to the heart.

Daereungwon is more expansive than expected, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Walking along the path that connects Bonghwangdae, Michuwangneung, and Cheonmachong, the golden leaves blanketing the ground made it feel like stepping through time. The exhibition hall inside Cheonmachong was particularly worth a visit. The neatly displayed tomb structures and excavated artifacts allowed visitors to fully appreciate the elegance of the Silla dynasty.

During the Chuseok holiday, many families visited, but instead of feeling crowded, the festive atmosphere complemented the experience. Many people wore hanbok, adding to the charm of the photos taken. Renting a hanbok from a shop near the entrance and taking pictures in front of the ridges resulted in truly beautiful shots.

In autumn, Daereungwon becomes even more picturesque as the leaves start to change color. The sunlight during the day is gentle, and by evening, the ridges are bathed in golden hues, leaving a lasting impression. As you walk slowly, the only sounds you hear are the rustling wind and your footsteps, offering a brief escape from the bustling city life.

One downside was that the admission hours ended earlier than expected, so it was necessary to hurry as sunset approached. Since entry is restricted around 5:30 PM, it’s best to arrive a bit earlier if you want to enjoy the crimson sky at dusk.

Visiting Gyeongju Daereungwon during Chuseok was truly a great choice. The blend of traditional charm and seasonal beauty allowed for a quiet yet rich autumn experience. Walking among the ancient tombs, it felt as if I had momentarily stepped back into the time of the Silla dynasty.
