Mujima Shrine, located at the northernmost point of Tanesashi Coast in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture
Known as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, it was designated a national natural monument during the Taisho era as the "Kabushima Black-tailed Gull Breeding Ground."
Originally an isolated island, the island was reclaimed by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942, resulting in its current landmass.
Enshrining Benzaiten, the shrine has long been worshipped by locals as the guardian deity of prosperous business and safe fishing.
Since the "kabu" (turnip) in Kabushima and the "kabu" (stock) are pronounced the same, it is said to bring good fortune in terms of increasing stock prices and popularity.
There is a "lucky pilgrimage" (unkai meguri) where you can pray by circling the main shrine three times before praying.
During breeding season, black-tailed gull droppings rain down from the sky.
Don't worry, free umbrellas are available to protect you from the black-tailed gulls' droppings.
