Kabushima Shrine sits atop a verdant hill overlooking the sea in Hachinohe, Aomori. Originally built in 1269 to honor Benzaiten, its rebuilt pavilion (completed in 2020) now crowns the former island, which is home each spring to 30,000–40,000 black‑tailed gulls nesting around the red torii gate—considered divine messengers of fortune.
Rough Budget:
– Admission: Free
– Transport: JR Same Station → 15‑min walk (~¥300–¥500) or short taxi ride
Travel Tip:
Visit between April and July to witness the nesting gulls. Bring an umbrella—in case of lucky droppings, you can obtain a “good‑luck certificate” at the shrine office
