Spring has officially sprung—and what better way to celebrate the season’s arrival than with a day trip to Mount Takao (高尾山), just an hour outside of Tokyo? As soon as I stepped off the train at Takaosanguchi Station, the fresh scent of cedar trees and a gentle breeze filled with promise welcomed me.
Mount Takao in spring is an absolute treat. The sakura trees lining the lower trails were in full bloom, showering petals with every step. The hike is beginner-friendly, with plenty of spots to pause and snack (hello, dango and matcha ice cream!). I reached the summit just in time for a picnic under soft pink blossoms, with a hazy view of Mount Fuji in the distance—talk about a reward!
If you’re in Japan this spring and craving both nature and culture, Mount Takao is the perfect one-day escape. Cherry blossoms, mountain air, spiritual vibes, and tasty treats—what more could you want?
Pro tip: Go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds and make the most of the peaceful mountain energy.
