Lake Ashi is a volcanic lake on the shores of Mount Hakone, located in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Formed approximately 3,000 years ago, it is the largest lake in Kanagawa Prefecture. Lake Ashi is a popular tourist destination and a renowned spot for viewing Mount Fuji from afar. Sightseeing boats offer cruises on Lake Ashi.
The lake is home to numerous tourist attractions and resort facilities, and is a popular spot for viewing Mount Fuji. Its popularity has been growing in recent years as a turning point for the Hakone Ekiden, held annually in January.
The lake is served by Odakyu Electric Railway's Hakone Sightseeing Boats and Izuhakone Railway (Seibu Group)'s Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boats. Ports of call include Togendai Port, Hakone Town Port, Moto-Hakone Port (Hakone Sightseeing Boats), Kojiri Port, Hakone-en Port, Hakone Sekisho Port, and Moto-Hakone Port (Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boats). The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise began operating in 1950. Known for its pirate-style boats, it's nicknamed the Hakone Pirate Ship.
