Helsinki

#northerneurope

Highlights: Helsinki had a cool, understated energy clean lines, Nordic design, and a strong connection to the sea. We started in Senate Square, where the stark white Helsinki Cathedral stood in contrast to the neoclassical buildings around it. The open space felt calm and grand at the same time, and the view from the cathedral steps gave a perfect intro to the city.

We wandered through the Design District, where every café, boutique, and gallery seemed effortlessly stylish. Finnish design really lives up to the hype minimal, functional, but warm. We stopped at Lokal, a small gallery-shop hybrid, and left with a few unique finds.

The Temppeliaukio Church carved directly into solid rock was a standout. The acoustics and copper dome gave it a quietly powerful atmosphere. In contrast, the Oodi Library was sleek and futuristic, more like a community hub than a traditional library, with open spaces, cafes, even a 3D printing lab.

A short ferry ride took us to Suomenlinna, a sea fortress spread across several islands. It was peaceful and scenic, with walking paths, old bunkers, and views out across the Baltic perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

We finished our visit with a classic Finnish sauna experience by the harbor, followed by a plunge into the cold sea. Invigorating doesn’t begin to cover it.
