Walking into Hida Takayama's old streets feels like stepping into a time machine. But instead of nostalgia, my main concern is—how many dishes can I try today?
I started at Miyagawa Morning Market, where I grabbed a skewer of freshly grilled Hida beef sushi. The seared wagyu placed on vinegared rice bursts with aroma and rich flavors in every bite—absolutely indulgent. Then, I couldn’t resist the enticing smell and bought a Hida beef bun. Its chewy exterior and juicy filling make it the perfect energy boost for tired feet!
Wandering through the alleys, I stumbled upon a small shop selling soy sauce dango (みたらし団子). Unlike the usual sweet version, this one has a slightly salty flavor, with a hint of char from grilling. At just 100 yen per skewer, it’s both affordable and addictive. Don’t forget to pair it with a warm cup of Hida milk or freshly brewed matcha. Sitting in front of an old machiya while sipping slowly—it’s an unbeatable experience.
Though Takayama Old Street isn’t large, its density of delicious food is incredibly high. Every few steps, there’s a new temptation. One trip isn’t enough to try everything—so I’ll definitely be back.
