Historical buildings from the Edo period - Takayama Old Street

#2024TravelReview

Gaoshan Old Street ~ "The gurgling water under the eaves forms a long grid of buildings; the wine forest with a spherical sign is surrounded by cedar leaves hanging in front of the door"

🔔Introduction: It is an ancient town representing the Takayama area, known as the "Little Kyoto of Hida". The old streets composed of "Umachi" and "Shitamachi" still retain the old streetscape of the Edo period, and also retain the architectural features of the "out of the box" style at that time. You can feel the strong historical atmosphere and traditional culture here! !

📚Tips:
"Chugezi": It is a type of machiya building with sliding windows. There are small holes on the door, just like a grid. It is a very charming and ancient Japanese building.

📖 Cold knowledge:
The Takayama area was also known as the "Sanmachi District" during the Edo period. It was a gathering place for common people to buy, sell and live. It is said that the wood used to build the houses at that time was high-grade cedar, which the government had clearly prohibited from being used. In order to avoid being tracked down, the residents painted the wood black to hide their tracks. This unintentional behavior unexpectedly allowed the houses to be preserved intact for more than 400 years. Today, it is recognized by the government as an "Important Traditional Buildings Conservation Area"!

✨Must-visit attractions in Old Street:
~Miyagawa Morning Market~
As one of the three largest morning markets in Japan, its history can be traced back to the Edo period. It is about 300 meters long and sells a wide variety of items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, handicrafts, and cooked food! ! If you get up early, why not come here and feel the leisurely atmosphere! !

~Takayama Jinya~
Takayama Jinya was the base of the shogunate's direct territory at the time. The Edo shogunate ruled Hida Province until 1868, a total of 176 years. During this period, 25 deputies and county governors were sent to govern the area. After the Meiji era (1868-), it continued to be used as the government office until it was relocated in 1969, guarding this land for 277 years. It is a "national monument"

🍜Must-eat food:
~ Funasaka Sake Brewery ~
It is a traditional factory specializing in brewing sake 🍶, among which "Shinyama Kiku" and "Jingorō" are the signatures among the signatures! ! It is also a complex sake facility that combines experience, shopping, and food. The alcohol sold there is very suitable for pairing with Hida beef dishes🤤~
