When traveling to Hida Takayama, I highly recommend strolling through Takayama's historic streets of Kami-San-no-Machi and Miyagawa Morning Market. Experience the cultural charm of this "Little Kyoto of Hida" and savor the delicious traditional Hida beef!
After checking in and stowing my luggage at my guesthouse, I borrowed a bicycle from the owner and headed for Kami-San-no-Machi. I'm so glad I made that decision! Having a bicycle meant I could cut down on walking and explore the streets and alleys.
Takayama City still retains its Edo-era street layout. Traditional sweet shops, Hida craft shops, and unique restaurants line the main streets, while the side streets offer a more down-to-earth feel. The must-try delicacy here is Hida beef; the meat is tender and juicy, and even grilled simply, it's incredibly delicious!
Takayama Jinya was once the administrative center for the shogunate's governance of Hida. It is the only remaining shogunate-era government office building in Japan and is now a designated national historic site.
Miyagawa Morning Market is where local farmers sell freshly harvested seasonal fruits and vegetables, pickled goods, and a few stalls selling handicrafts. The food and drinks are sure to satisfy your appetite!
