As one of the twelve remaining original castles in Japan, Himeji Castle has always been regarded as one of the most beautiful castles in Japan, even nicknamed the 'White Egret Castle' for its elegant, white walls that resemble a white egret spreading its wings. This visit allowed me to deeply appreciate the grandeur and historical depth of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Magnificent Appearance and Structure
From a distance, the white walls of Himeji Castle shine charmingly under the sunlight. The entire castle is situated on a small hill, exuding a majestic aura. Upon reaching the castle gate, one can feel its imposing presence as a formidable defensive structure from Japan's Warring States period. The defensive designs on the castle walls, such as arrow slits and stone-throwing holes, perfectly showcase the sophisticated military architecture of the time.
The most striking feature is the castle's main keep, a five-story, six-level structure that stands out among many castles. Climbing the steep stairs step by step, one can sense the lord's considerations for defense, with narrow passages that transport you back to the turbulent Warring States period.
Interior Design and Historical Atmosphere
The wooden structure inside the castle exudes a rustic beauty, with many of the timbers retaining their original appearance. Although the interior layout is simple and unadorned, it demonstrates functionality and practicality. During the visit, I paid special attention to the hidden doors and passages used for defense, which fully display the ingenuity of the architects of that time.
The exhibits inside the castle include many artifacts and introductions about the history of Himeji Castle, from its construction background to its later restoration process. These provide a deeper understanding of its cultural significance and preservation value.
Breathtaking Views from the Top
When I finally reached the top floor of the main keep, a breathtaking view unfolded before my eyes. Overlooking Himeji City from above, the distant mountains and the cityscape intertwine to form a beautiful picture. At that moment, I was not only amazed by the scenery but also moved by the centuries of history accumulated by this castle.
💞Recommended Reason:
Himeji Castle is not just a building but a living textbook witnessing the changes in Japanese history and culture. Its design, preservation status, and surrounding scenery are all awe-inspiring. If you are interested in Japanese history or architecture, Himeji Castle is definitely a must-visit attraction. Standing before this centuries-old castle, you will inevitably feel a sense of awe and respect that transcends time and space.
