Himeji Castle is honored as a Japanese National Treasure and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Its snow-white walls and elegant eaves resemble a white heron spreading its wings, earning it the nickname "White Heron Castle." In addition to being one of Japan's Top 100 Castles, it is also ranked alongside Kumamoto Castle and Matsumoto Castle as one of the "Three Great Castles of Japan." Due to its well-preserved main keep, it is often referred to as "Japan's Number One Castle."
Located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, Himeji Castle serves as the city's iconic symbol. Its white exterior has led to its nickname, "White Heron Castle."
As one of Japan's most symbolic and best-preserved castles, Himeji Castle is designated as a National Treasure and a Special Historic Site by the Japanese government. It was among the first sites in Japan to be recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and is listed as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. The castle's preservation is remarkable, with its main keep being one of the twelve surviving original keeps in Japan, further solidifying its reputation as "Japan's Number One Castle."
Many period dramas and films have been shot here, often using Himeji Castle as a representation of Edo Castle.
