In my understanding, Sheung Wan seems like a food desert, but actually, in recent years, quite a few cafes and restaurants have moved in here. This time, I want to introduce this Vietnamese restaurant 😎
Ăn Chơi is a small shop located on Ma Sa Street in Sheung Wan, run by a Vietnamese couple; the restaurant features a retro street style, with bright yellow walls that are very eye-catching, paired with colorful plastic stools and conical hats, truly full of nostalgic Vietnamese vibes 😺
This small shop specializes in authentic Vietnamese dishes, with daily special recommendations 😉 This time, I tried several of their signature dishes, including starters like grilled eggplant and stir-fried corn. The eggplant is somewhat like steamed, with a fairly sweet taste, paired with garlic slices and peanuts for a rich texture 😍 The corn is fresh and sweet with a bit of spiciness 😋 For the main dishes, I tried beef pho with southern and northern styles. The southern pho includes three toppings: beef balls, beef brisket, and beef slices, while the northern pho only has beef slices. Both are very delicious, but the southern broth is a bit oilier, and the northern broth is slightly sweeter 👍🏿 There’s also grilled chicken with lime leaf sticky rice and Vietnamese-style pork roll banh mi. The grilled chicken is full of spices and tender, but be careful as some spices can be a bit hard and might scratch your mouth 🙈 Paired with a special sauce, it really has a unique flavor; as for the banh mi, it’s quite appetizing and very filling 🤤 Finally, of course, there’s dessert. I tried a less common grilled banana sticky rice. The shop wraps sticky rice around a large banana and grills it, then adds coconut milk and peanuts. Although it can feel a bit sweet after a couple of bites, overall it’s very tasty 😻
Although I’ve only been to Vietnam once and can’t really judge how authentic the food is, I believe the owners strive to let everyone in Hong Kong experience the taste of Vietnam. Besides many photo spots inside, they also have a happy hour every day from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Friends who love Vietnamese food might want to come chill here after work!
