Hiking and Outing

There are two main hiking routes to Thousand Island Lake: one starts from So Kwun Wat in Tuen Mun, and the other starts from Tai Tong in Yuen Long. Both routes lead to the Thousand Island Lake Viewing Platform, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. The Tai Tong route offers the chance to see red leaves from November to December. Most of the trails are flat concrete paths, but the section leading up to the Thousand Island Lake Viewing Platform has more stone steps and loose soil due to desertification issues, so extra caution is needed.

Starting from So Kwun Wat:
Begin at So Kwun Wat Village and hike up along Section 10 of the MacLehose Trail. You will pass some muddy and rocky paths, and it takes about 1.5 hours to reach the Thousand Island Lake Viewing Platform.

Starting from Tai Tong:
Begin at Tai Tong Shan Road, pass through Tai Lam Nature Education Trail and Shek Kiu, then start climbing stone steps. Some sections are muddy before finally reaching the Thousand Island Lake Viewing Platform. You can also enjoy the red leaves at Tai Tong Maple Forest first before heading to Thousand Island Lake.

Transportation to Start:
• Bus K66 - board at Long Ping Station B1
• Red Minibus - board at Hung Min Wai
• Get off at Tai Tong Shan Road stop

Transportation from End:
• Minibus 43/43S - board at So Kwun Wat towards Tuen Mun Station
Distance: Approximately 9.5 km
Duration: 3-4 hours (including breaks and photos)
Retreat Point: Return to Tai Tong BBQ Site
Supply Point: So Kwun Wat Convenience Store
Restrooms: Tai Tong BBQ Site, Maple Forest Portable Toilets, So Kwun Wat
