Background
Ocean Park opened in January 1977 and sits on over 915,000 square meters of rugged hillside between Wong Chuk Hang and Nam Long Shan on Hong Kong Island. It’s operated by Ocean Park Corporation, a non-profit focused on entertainment, education, and conservation. The park is divided into two main zones: The Waterfront and The Summit, connected by the scenic Ocean Express train (plus by cable cars on certain routes). Over the decades it’s grown to include aquarium exhibits, thrill rides, wildlife habitats, themed zones, and ocean-front views.
Why It’s Worth Visiting
• Variety: From the Grand Aquarium with its reef tunnel and panoramic ocean gallery, to themed areas like Amazing Asian Animals, Whiskers Harbour (great for kids), Thrill Mountain (for ride lovers), Polar Adventure, Rainforest, and marine exhibits, you can mix wildlife, nature and adrenaline in one day.
• Conservation & Education: The park is known for caring for animals, offering educational displays about ecosystems and endangered species, and doing wildlife conservation work. The animal welfare certifications and efforts are part of its mission.
• Scenic Experience: Because of the hillside setting, you get sweeping views of sea and mountains as you move between zones. The Ocean Express ride is scenic, not just functional. It helps with logistics (no long uphill walks) and gives itself some entertainment value.
My Impression
Ocean Park struck me as more than a theme park—it’s like a collage of experiences where nature, thrill, and marine life all share the stage. One minute I’m walking through serene aquatic galleries watching manta rays glide overhead; the next, I’m on a ride at Thrill Mountain with the city far behind. The contrast is exciting. I loved how the park doesn’t feel one-dimensional: it gives space for calm (animal viewing, marine habitats) and excitement (coasters, drops). If you’re ever in Hong Kong and want a full day of variety—with views, wildlife, and heart-pumping moments—Ocean Park delivers.
