Tai Lam Chung Reservoir Hiking Tour

Tai Lam Chung Reservoir was completed in 1957. As there are many hills in the reservoir, it looks like several islands, so it is known as the Thousand Islands Lake in Hong Kong. It is one of the top ten scenic spots in the hiking world.

In the past, it was not easy to overlook Qiandao Lake, but the Fisheries and Conservation Department built the "Qiandao Viewing Platform" at the end of 2018, which greatly reduced the difficulty of appreciating Qiandao Lake. Most of the routes are the 10-section Mai Keng Country Trail, with clear signs. Although there are ups and downs, most people can handle it. The difficulty is medium

Route: Tai Tong Shan Road > Tai Lam Country Park > Thousand Islands Lake Ching King Terrace > So Kwun Wat

Difficulty: ★★★☆☆

Time: About 3 hours

Distance: Approximately 9 km

Supplies: No

transportation:

Starting point: Red minibus (Tai Tong – Thousand Colours Plaza), MTR bus No. K66 (Tai Tong – Long Ping), get off at Tai Tong Shan Road Station

End point: Green minibus No. 43 (Tuen Mun San Hui – So Kwun Wat), get on at So Kwun Wat Village

To see Thousand Islands Lake, you can take a bus from Yuen Long to Tai Tong Shan Road Bus Stop and walk along the road directly to Tai Lam Country Park. Not far from the park entrance is a barbecue area, where you can use the restrooms before returning to the road and continuing up the mountain. The mountain trail runs along the direction of the Liquidambar forest. The Datong Liquidambar Forest is a famous place for viewing maple leaves. Once the maple leaves appear in autumn and winter, it will be crowded with people.

The red leaves of the Liquidambar forest do not come from maple trees (belonging to the Aceraceae family), but from liquidambar trees (Hamamelidaceae family). The leaves of the two are similar in shape, but the leaves of the sweet gum tree are generally three-lobed, while the leaves of the maple tree are five-lobed.

During the red leaf season, the Liquidambar Garden is crowded with people.

Continue up the mountain path and you will see the 10th branch of the MacLehose Trail. Turn left towards Tin Fu Tsai Sham Tseng and turn right towards Tuen Mun. For this trip, choose the right side towards Tuen Mun. After going up for a while, you will see the sign for the Bogong'ao section, which means you are in the right direction.

Continue walking along the MacLehose Trail towards Wong Nai Tun Reservoir, passing by the Guandi Temple (Tai Tong Pak Gong Temple), in front of which there is a beautiful bronze statue of the Red Hare. On the steps along the Guandi Temple branch line towards the Huangnidun Reservoir, you will see the M181 distance column, indicating that it is not far from the "Qingjing Terrace of Qiandao Lake". Soon, we saw the sign for "Qiandao Lake Qingjing Terrace".
