Houston Botanic Garden

Fungi Fest & the Mysterious Underground

Fungi Fest is one of the most evocative autumn events I’ve attended. The Houston Botanic Garden leaned into the natural weirdness and beauty of mushrooms: guided walks exploring fungi in hidden patches, workshops about their ecology, markets with fungi-themed items, and even “life underground” exhibits. As dusk approached, the woods and wet shaded corners of the garden felt like places stories hide — damp earth, decaying wood, the faint scent of mushrooms. I found myself crouching near fallen logs, peering under leaf litter for hidden clusters. The vibe is spooky in the best way: rich, quiet, a little uncanny. For nature nerds, gardeners, and those who love the slower, more reflective side of Halloween, this one’s gold.
