The Atayal tribe, known as "God's Tribe" #Simakusi Sacred Trees - Jianshan Township, Hsinchu County

#AugustDestinations2025

Deep in the mountains of Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Taiwan, lies the Atayal tribe of Smangus, known as "God's Tribe." This isolated community is renowned not only for its rich Atayal culture but also for a breathtaking natural wonder: the Smangus Sacred Trees. To reach the sacred trees, visitors must hike the approximately 5.2-kilometer Giant Tree Trail from Smangus. This round-trip hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours and offers a rich ecological experience, including bamboo forests, maple trees, and numerous endemic flora and fauna. The first section of the trail is gentle and easy, while the latter section involves some climbing, but the trail is well-maintained and easily accessible for those with sufficient stamina. The sacred trees here are made up of dozens of giant red cypress trees, the most famous of which is the giant tree called "Grandpa Simakus". This sacred tree is over 2,500 years old, with a thick trunk towering into the sky, like a silent guardian, witnessing the vicissitudes of this land. When you stand at its feet, the shock and insignificance of nature will make you feel awe.
