Tucked away in the suburbs of Hualien City lies a hidden gem: 48 Highland. Located high on the coast of Qixingtan, 48 Highland, also known as Qilaibi or Meilunbi, boasts a unique natural plateau formed by a terraced sea. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by a vast expanse of green grass. A straight trail leads to a viewing platform, where the vast blue Pacific Ocean stretches out before you. Located on the north side of Hualien Harbor, 48 Highland gets its name from its approximately 48-meter elevation. The trail system is well-developed, with signage explaining the history and ecology of 48 Highland. Here, you can feel the vastness and power of the Pacific Ocean while enjoying the tranquility of the gentle sea breeze. During the Japanese colonial period, this area served as a military zone, housing artillery batteries and fortifications. Military relics, such as artillery emplacements and bunkers, can still be found around the highland. This is definitely a great place to watch the sunrise and sunset in Hualien.
